Age Spots Before and After

March 12, 2012

Age spots (brown spots, sun spots, liver spots) are brownish or yellowish marks which typically appear on sun exposed parts of the body. This change in pigmentation is usually seen on elderly persons, especially their face, chest and hands. It’s not uncommon to find these blemishes in young people too (even as young as 20).

Despite their name, these skin lesions don’t have anything to do with liver disease or the liver. They are caused by sun damage. You may be wondering why you’ve suddenly got sun spots popping up on your skin considering you haven’t been sunbathing for a decade now. You apply sunscreen daily and wear sheltered clothing, so where did they come from? The truth is, the damage may have been caused in your younger years from sunburn or long periods of exposure to the sun and it’s only just starting to show.

So, how can I get rid of them? There are not many natural remedies that will work on brown spots. Some have suggested trying a combination of onion juice and apple cider vinegar applied to the skin every day for several months. However, improvement is not guaranteed and you could end up damaging your skin even more. Cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists offer various treatments to lighten age spots. These range from laser treatments such as Fraxel Repair and Pixel Laser to light based treatments like IPL Photofacial and the less invasive depigmentation creams such as Cosmelan.

Causes of age spots

Age spots are a result from direct exposure to the sun over time, this is the short answer. They may appear on your face, neck, shoulders, hands or all over your body. Our skin has something which is called “melanine pigment”, this absorbs sunlight helping protect skin from damaging ultraviolet sun rays, once this pigment is worn out we start to develop age spots. There are several types of brown spots and these are age spots (or solar lentigos) and what we know as freckles. The term age spots actually have not indicator of how old we are but are a simple indicator of how much time we’ve spent in the sun and how prone our skin is to it.

Before treatment

Firstly we will talk a little about prevention of age spots. Before ever having to go into treatment whether it’s a peel or laser procedure you should be taking care of your skin your whole life. You should also know that genetics play a major part in how early in life you get age spots, some people are luckier than others when it comes to years. If you work a job stuck in the sun all day every day then you will no doubt get age spots earlier than someone who sits at an office all day, sacrifices always have to be made. Basic sun protection is very simple if you make it part of everyday life and you must think twice next time you want to tan and look good for a few days when you will develop age spots in the end. We all know how to avoid the sun for prolonged periods and we won’t bother going into that here.

Before considering age spot treatments you must decide where on the body you’d like to have it done, the areas treated most by cosmetic surgeons is the face, hands and chest. Your next step is to choose whether you’re up for a peel or laser treatment, we have included a list of peels and laser below in the related procedures section; feel free to research each of these one by one so you’re informed. And finally you have to find a local cosmetic physician who performs the procedure you’re looking for. Please note we list all the details needed to make up your mind on each procedure within the related procedures section.

Risks, complications and side effects

Chemical peel risks explained

It’s considered a fact that depending on how deep the peel is supposed to penetrate your skin the more side effects, complications and risks come along with them. Generally with age spots you’d want the peel to be quite strong to remove the age spots. We provide more in depth information on chemical peels which treat age spots in the related procedures section below. Below general complications that can occur.

Laser treatment risks explained

Ablative treatments (traditional laser) were made for the purpose of burning away skin tissue with heat. It’s highly likely that the physician performing the procedure will also remove healthy skin so you should make sure the doctor has experience before going with them. There will definitely be redness and possibly oozing and even scarring. The treatment itself is quite painful and you will be horrified at what you’ll look like in a few days when your skin starts peeling away but you must think where there is no pain there is no gain.

Recovery time

For the recovery times of each procedure that treats age spots visit the related procedures section below and click on any of the links and navigate down to the recovery time section of that treatment.

Average peel recovery time

1 to 2 weeks.

Average laser treatment recovery time

2 weeks to 1.5 months.

After treatment

After age spot treatment you can consider yourself a champion because you’ve gone through the rough recovery period for the sake of looking more youthful and beautiful. The majority of people who go through this process (especially the lasers) end up very happy with their results and only wished treatments weren’t so pricey. You can be rest assured now that you will do your best to stay out of the sun (you don’t have a choice) to avoid damaging your new skin. Generally after peels and lasers you should be given a cream or lotion to put on your face to stop it from drying and itching. Whatever you do avoid picking and scratching irritated areas at all costs as this may result in scarring and longer recovery periods.

Considering the fact that peels and laser treatments are the only cosmetic surgery procedures available to treat signs of age spots we have listed 3 example of each below.

I’m 27 years old and I’ve had freckles all over my face since I was a teenager, I don’t know whether I can talk about freckles here but I think it’s the same thing as age spots pretty much. My freckles never bothered me so much on my body but I was really insecure about my face being riddled with them. I looked at cosmetic treatments online for a while and noticed there wasn’t much besides lasers and peels that proved to be effective. I didn’t have much money and decided to go with a Jessner peel because laser treatments all were over $1000. I had the peel done at a dermatology clinic in Atlanta, Georgia by an experienced physician and they warned me about the side effects with which I was fine with. I must admit there was a little swelling on my face especially around my lips and eyes but nothing I want able to recover from. I had it done on Monday and by Friday afternoon to evening everything was good and my freckles were almost completely gone. The treatment cost me only $180 which is quite cheap and affordable. I plan to have another one in a few months to get rid of more freckles. My face looks great two weeks later and it really helped me feel good about myself. I only wished I had the money to have any laser treatment as they are more effective I believe, maybe one day I might get it done instead of going on a little holiday. If you end up posting my review then thank you Jakub. I just wanted to share my experience.

YouTube video

This is a YouTube video by American Medical Aesthetics which explains how age spots (pigmented lesions) develop. A young patient who is about to get married is interviewed. She had sun damage on her chest, shoulders face and back. After two laser treatments, her skin looks beautiful and blemish free. The doctor explains that the treatment also helps to reduce the risk of skin cancers as well as aesthetic benefits. The lasers cause the melanin to change its molecular structure and the body dissolves it away. It’s quick, safe, painless and non-invasive.
